One Jumma villager sustained injuries on Sunday 27 August when a group of Bengali settlers attacked him with a dao (a kind of knife) in Maischari of Northern Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. About one hundred settlers from Maischari went to Ugudochari, 3 kilometers east of Maischari town and began clearing jungle at Biharpara to make a new settlement there. A large contingent of military personnel accompanied them to provide protection.

When this news spread, the Jumma villagers gathered together and put up resistance. One Jumma was seriously injured when the settlers attacked them. The injured has been identified as Dipu Chakma (25) s/o Dayal Kumar Chakma. He has been admitted to Khagrachari hospital.

In the face of resistance the settlers had to retreat and the attempt to grab the land failed. But fears of further attempt still loom large in the area.
