Chiefs on Bougainville have been assigned to investigate the alleged assassination plot against President Joseph Kabui
Chiefs on Bougainville have been assigned to investigate the alleged assassination plot against President Joseph Kabui. This was after a nine-member committee comprising the chiefs from Kieta, Wakunai, Tsitalato and Bana in a meeting between ABG President Kabui and Central Bougainville MP and Mining Minister Sam Akoitai were tasked to investigate the allegations on Friday.

After the meeting, a joint press statement agreed to deal with Mr Kabuis assassination allegations. The statement said: We appreciate and share the concerns and bewilderment expressed by our chiefs regarding the allegations that have recently attracted publicity in the media, especially in the print media. Like all threats to a personal life, the allegations must be taken seriously.

After consultations with our chiefs and leaders from Central, North Bougainville, Bana and ABG ministers, we agree that the best way to address this matter is through the process resolved at this meeting.

The meeting resolved the committee had two weeks to carry out its investigation beginning July 17. The committee of chiefs will report their findings to a meeting of all groups within the region who have had a stake on the Bougainville peace process and release its report.
