Abkhazia: Dutch Government to Participate in Implementation of Projects

The Dutch government is ready to continue participation in
implementation of short-term projects in Abkhazia, Deputy Ambassador of the
Kingdom of the Netherlands in Georgia Janet Alberdu said at a meeting with Abkhaz
President Sergey Bagapsh. The diplomat noted that the government of her country
participated in financing of projects carried out by Halo Trust, the Reconciliation
Resources as well as by the UN mission. According to her, the Abkhaz leader
expressed gratitude to the Dutch government for participation in implementing
the projects in Abkhazia. Sergey Bagapsh told about measures taken by the republic’s
leadership to support medium and small business and develop agriculture. According
to him, the situation of “neither peace nor war” hinders successful
development of the republic’s economy.
“Ceaseless belligerent rhetoric by the Georgian leadership
does not help in establishing the relations between the parties,” stressed
the Abkhazian leader. Sergey Bagapsh noted that Abkhazia speaks for peaceful
settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict and establishment of friendly relations
between the two countries. As for Abkhazia’s political status, the republic’s
leader the question cannot be subject to discussion, as independent status of
Abkhazia was defined by the people by a referendum. The leader confirmed Abkhazia’s
readiness to render all possible assistance to South Ossetia in case of aggression
from Georgia. The president and Janet Alberdu exchanged opinions on issues of
implementation of humanitarian projects in Abkhazia, in which the Dutch government
can participate.
