UNPO Appeals to Minister of Justice in Cameroon

UNPO appeals to the Minister of Justice in Cameroon to address illegal detentions of Southern Cameroonians, considering the arbitrary arrests violate basic human rights of pacific protesters

On 03 April 2006 UNPO addressed an appeal to Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Amadou Ali following growing concern about the situation in Southern Cameroons.

Recently, UNPO received news about a series of arbitrary arrests in the area of Anglophonic Southern Cameroons in the Republic of Cameroon. Recently, eight students of the Mamfe Government Bilingual College and members of the Southern Cameroon Youths League (SCYL) were put under arbitrary arrest during a non-violent demonstration at the inauguration ground of the Mamfe general hospital. The students were subsequently released, however, according to reports, two non-student members of Southern Cameroon Youths League, namely Etand Conrad Eta and William Enow Tabot are still under detention at the Gendarmerie brigade in Mamfe.

UNPO is deeply concerned by the fact that arbitrary arrests and unjust treatment of Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC) and SCYL representatives of Cameroons continue, violating basic human rights. UNPO appealed to the Minister of Justice to ensure the immediate release of the Etand Conrad Eta and William Enow Tabot and to urge the government to take measures to end incidents of arbitrary arrests of SCNC and SCYL representatives engaged in non-violent struggles and peaceful demonstrations.
