Hungarian Minority in Romania: DAHR Expresses Continued Support for Different Forms of Autonomy


Béla Markó, President of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania said that the establishment of the different forms of autonomy is an indispensable condition for continued long-term presence of the Hungarian community in Transylvania
During a debate titled “Autonomy and Long-term Presence of Hungarians” at the Deák Ferenc Club in Budapest, Hungary, President of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania(DAHR) Béla Markó, argued that “the establishment of the different forms of autonomy is an indispensable condition for continued long-term presence of the Hungarian community in Transylvania”.

The debate was between President Markó and former Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Géza Jeszenszky, about the fate of Hungarians from Transylvania, DAHR policy and autonomy. Speaking to a large audience, President Markó underlined that DAHR regarded it as of utmost importance to establish and autonomous state university in the Hungarian language, this being one of the fundamental conditions for safeguarding national identity. The President of DAHR also pointed out that the establishment of different forms of autonomy remains a priority for the DAHR.
