Tibet: EU Parliamentarians Meet Dalai Lama

A delegation of the Tibet Intergroup of the European Parliament met Tibetans in exile in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh yesterday.

The delegation comprises members from eight European countries, Austria, Germany, Ukraine, France, Italy, Slovakia, Poland and Finland.The members of the Tibet Intergroup are here to put pressure on high level talks between China and Tibet.

Addressing media persons in Dharamshala yesterday, the members said that they are making the most of this oppurtunity to raise talks from low to a high level. Women parliamentarians in the delegation feel that women have a greater role to play in the freedom and democracy process, which is why women should have a greater involvement.

“Women’s empowerment is political, economic and social empowerment. It is so important that we bring it to the headlines that women have an essential role to play in the whole freedom and democracy process in the forthcoming elections of the Tibetans,” said Lissy Groner, Member of the delegation and Vice Chairperson of the Tibet Intergroup.

The delegation met the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Prime Minister, government officials, NGOs.

“We had an excellent and fruitful talks with His Holiness The Dalai Lama.We got to meet the NGOs.We also visited colleges, the authorities and the common people here.The ongoing dialogue with the Chinese authorities has to raised up,” said Thomas, President of the Tibet Intergroup.

The members of the delegation are very hopeful that they can bring changes in the political agenda and are also hopeful of bringing the Chinese and Tibetan high authorities on a single table for dialogue as international mediators.
