The weapons brought in by Sandline International mercenaries
in 1997 would be sold. Acting PNG Defence Force Commander navy Captain Alois
Tom Ur said yesterday that the PNGDF has no use for the type of weapons. He
explained that the weapons are being held at an Air Force Base in Australia.
Capt Tom Urr said there was an understanding between the Australian government
for the weapons disposal. We have no use for the weapons, he said. He said
there were only two planes, a Cessna and Cassa 202 at the Air Transport Wing.
He said the two planes had been grounded for a long time and specialists were
needed to fine-tune the machines. He said the Cassa, built in Spain was the
problem with no specialist in PNG to fix it. Capt Tom Urr said they may use
the aeroplanes for surveillance. Defence Minister Kappa Yarka said he heard
some stories the Australians are trying to sell the weapons. (The National)
