All the opposition forces in the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia have held the founding congress of a new public and political movement, the Forum of People’s Unity of Abkhazia (FPUA).

The list of founding organizations includes the Apsny Republican Party, the Popular Party, the Social Democratic Party, and another nine public, social, and political associations.

Avtandil Gartskiya, a FPUA co-chairman specified the objectives of the united opposition, which are to seek state power in the republic and to prepare for parliamentary and future presidential elections.

“Any kind of state power must have an opposition,” Gartskiya said.

“FPUA sets itself a goal of creating a genuine democratic society, developing Abkhazia’s multifaceted culture, maintaining the Abkhazian language, supporting patriotism, taking part in elected agencies of power and in referendums,” he said.
