Chechen Foreign Ministry welcomes a draft resolution of the United States Senate urging US President

Press Release of the Chechen Foreign Ministry
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria welcomes a draft resolution of the United States Senate introduced by U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) on November 21, urging US President to suspend Russia’s membership in the Group of Eight (G-8) industrialized democracies “until the Russian Government ends its assault on political freedom, independent media, and the rule of law and demonstrates its commitment to the democratic principles that unite all other members of the G-8.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria firmly believes that the McCain-Lieberman sponsored resolution, which among other things observes that Russia’s “widespread atrocities against civilians in Chechnya do not reflect the minimum standards of democratic governance and rule of law that characterize every other member of the G-8”, is an important step forward in the interests of both the Russian and Chechen peoples.

An undemocratic Russia that commits genocidal war crimes and crimes against humanity in Chechnya and denies rights and freedoms to its own citizens in Russia does not represent the will of the Russian people and must have no place in the group of developed democracies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria hopes that the proposed resolution will become a corner stone of the United States Foreign Policy towards the current Russian regime, which has crossed all limits of a responsible political leadership and must be held accountable.
