Nagalim: Extending the cease-fire agreement with India

UNPO is encouraged by the extension of the cease-fire agreement between India and Nagalim. In a Joint Statement issued on 14 June 2001, both parties agreed in Bangkok that they would "abide by the ground rules (of the ongoing peace process) as revised on 13 January 2001, both in letter and spirit".

It was agreed to further extend the cease-fire for a period of one year with effect from 1August 2001. According to the statement "the Government of India and the NSCN agreed to proceed with the peace process on substantive issues to bring about a lasting political solution to the issue. It is recognised that there is a need for mutual trust and respect".

Mr Th. Muivah signed the statement in his capacity as General Secretary of the NSCN. Parties agreed to have the next round of peace talks in the last week of July/first week of August 2001.
