Western Togoland: Youth Association Against Oil Drilling in Their Homeland

On 9 May 1956, a referendum was held on the territorial status of British Togoland in which people could choose to either become part of the former Gold Coast, present-day Ghana, or to become unified with French Togo. In this plebiscite, only six areas in this mandated land were allowed to vote, leaving the voices of the people of the Anlor and other lands such as Hoto, Akatsi and Peki unheard. On the occasion of a public meeting held by the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana on the matter of the Keta Delta Block between 4 and 8 June 2018, the Association of Western Togoland Youths (ASWETOY) urges Ghana to stop venturing into the mineral deposits of the homeland of Western Togolanders.

The press release below was issued by the Association of Western Togoland Youths (ASWETOY):

Message:

THE KETA BASINS AND THE OIL EXPLORATION.

The Association of Western Togoland Youths - ASWETOY, a youth group which drew its membership from the entire Western Togoland or the Trans-Volta Togoland which became a British Mandated Territory or the Trust Territory after the first and second world War, became upset after taking the time and painstakingly going through all the events of the past which has brought us to this misfortune fit.

Our message is not to re-educate you on the past events which has brought about the unfortunate annexation of our natural right. But to reiterate that the territorial boundaries of the Gold Coast now Republic of Ghana is historical settling of the Ewe etc Tribes of the Togoland.

Again, the various colonization wars have given us a lot of education about our land like the DATSUTAGBA and the CANAL wars between the British of Gold Coast and the Anlor of the Togoland (Western Togoland).

We are sending this warning because we received a public notice by the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana about their plan to hold a public meeting on the Keta Delta Block on the 4th day of June to 8th day of June 2018. We hereby wish to send this message across the whole world to warn Ghana and its various agencies that the Keta Block as they put it is not a Territory of Ghana so they should advise themselves to avert any radical action from we the youths and other well-meaning citizens of the land.

The various misinformation given to stomach centred individual and some chiefs that the Keta land belong to the British Gold Coast is never true. In any case why did they prevent the people of the Anlor and other lands such as those that lie down from Hoto Akatsi, and Peki, and others from taking part in that unfortunate plebiscite of 1956, was it not because the citizens at that time made it clear to them (Britain and Gold Coast) that no one votes to become a citizen of his God given country?

The argument that the Fort Prinzenstein in Keta was put up by the British was a misleading distortion of facts of history because we all knew the history of the slave trade and the entire slave trade history as well as the ownership of that fort. By you reading this we the youth of the Western Togoland will like to assure you all in the corridors of world peace that should Ghana continue with this aggression sown in them by her colonial master who has illegally annexed our land and destiny in 1956 and are now referring to us as Ghanaian, we could retaliate aggressively and the outcome could be barbaric and bloody. Because we still have the scars on our bodies and we are assuring you again that we have what it takes to repeat the events of the past and no technology or people can stop us!

Ghana must stop venturing into the properties of the Western Togoland, her colonial master can tell her any story as far as the Anlor land in concerned but we the God given property owners have our own story which Ghanaians are aware of, when Britain was coming to the shore of Africa they didn't come with lands to say they have left a land for her colony. This is a warning if not the last one, anything contrarily to these assertions, would make us advise ourselves in the contrary.

We are for peace.

∙ Ghana must stop venturing into the mineral deposit of the Western Togoland.

∙ Ghana must also stop dividing into further pieces the land size of the Western Togoland.

If this is the education their colonial master taught them which was vividly captured in those various secret documents before her independence they must not continue that paths or else the world should get ready to witness the outcome of another British laid down fictitious action of the world.

We want the world to know that at the holding of that unfortunate Plebiscite of 1956 only 6 areas in the whole of the mandated land were allowed to take part with a lot of unfair electoral practices and this has had great impacts on the results.

And again, nobody voted to choose where to settle as humans where God or nature gave is to where you should belong! If you don't like that place then the highest you could do is to migrate so to the decolonization committee of UN, we the future leaders of the Trust Territory have not recognized your work and statements that the "British Mandated Togoland has become independence as part of Ghana in 1956".

We are currently in the possession of the United Nations documents on how the plebiscite was to be effected and the union be established. But none of those rules were followed or implemented so we can categorically say to all that there is no union between Ghana and the Western Togoland and for that matter we shall not sit down for Ghana to claim us illegally and peacefully.

It is our hope that this piece from us will be given the necessary attentions from you all that this may concern. We don't want to take any action for you to blame us for not being sensible.

Thank you all.
