Who is Alaeddin Boroujerdi?

On 23 Jan 2018, the European Parliament will host Alaeddin Boroujerdi for an Exchange of Views. Currently the Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Iranian Parliament, also called "Majlis", Mr Boroujerdi is part of the conservatives in Iran who support the Supreme Leader.

After finishing his studies in Najaf as a technician in laboratory, Boroujerdi started working in Dubai, where after the Islamic Revolution in Iran he established the "Committee of the Islamic Revolution". In 1981, he returned to Iran to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as deputy of the Minister Ali Akbar Velayat. Due to his fluency in Arabic,  Boroujerdi was responsible to oversee relations with Golf and Arab countries of the Middle-East.

In 2011, Karim Ghadosi, member of the Committee for National Security, accused Boroujerdi of involvement with being Amir Mansour Aria’s company. Boroujerdi was arrested under the accusation of embezzlement, but released after 24 hours thanks to the mediation of the current Head of Iranian Parliament, Ali Larijani. In the investigation, some documents found revealed supporting letters for Amir Mansour Aria’s company by Alaeddin Boroujerdi, including letters signed on behalf of the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Iranian Parliament.

Businessman Amir Mansour Aria had become famous for being Iran’s richest man, even though not having educational qualifications. An assessment made in April 2012 by Forbes indicated his wealth as more than US$1bi, ranking 219th among richest people in the world.

Through his connections and by using forged documents, supporting letters and bribery, Amir Mansour Aria managed to receive US$2.6mi in loans from Iranian banks. The money was then used to purchase state-owned business. By 2011, his company was holding more than 35 different business, including companies related to mineral water exploitation, meat importation, a football club, Lorestan's car factory, Iran's Steel Industrial Group, Railways and Khuzestan's Auxin Steel Industry.

Hopeful to run for the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alaeddin Boroujerdi had to give up his political plans after the scandal involving Amir Mansour Aria Company became public. Even though Karim Ghadosy, the Representative of the city of Mashhad, requested the removal of Alaeddin Boroujerdi as the Head of Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security, Boroujerdi managed to dodge prosecution thanks to his connections with high ranks in the Iranian regime. On 8 Dec 2013, he announced that he had filed a complaint to the court against the person who accused him to be part of the embezzlement, leading to the accused to face 6 months in prison.

For being the mastermind of the 2011 Iranian embezzlement scandal, Amir Mansour Aria was executed in 2014 and, buried with him, all the secrets of the involvements of bankers and influentials in the Iranian regime who helped him and benefitted from his activities.

Ahead of the Exchange of Views with the European Parliament, UNPO express concern with the presence of the highly controversial figure of Alaeddin Boroujerdi. It is worth remembering that in 2009, after the Green Movement uprising, he was appointed by the Iranian Parliament as the Head of the "Investigation Committee" for the situation of the prisons and the detainees, with a mandate to visit the jails in the country. In his final report, despite vast evidence of gross human rights violation, Boroujerdi commended the prisons as “perfect” and even described Evin Prison in Tehran as "heaven".
