Abkhazia: Humanitarian Aid Provided to Syria

As humanitarian aid, twelve tons of bottled drinking water were recently sent to the Syrian Arab Republic at the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Committee for Repatriation. The transportation is being assisted by the General Staff of the Abkhazian Armed Forces and by the Russian Ministry of Defence. Around five million people are deprived of free access to drinking water in Syria – home to a large Abkhaz diaspora – since the functioning of the country’s water supply networks was severely damaged by the armed conflict.

At the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Committee for Repatriation 12 tons of bottled drinking water of the highest category was sent to the Syrian Arab Republic as humanitarian aid on 9 August. The transportation of water takes place with the assistance of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

Kodor the bottled drinking water of the highest category is extracted from artesian wells located in Gulripsh district of Abkhazia.

To date about 5 million people in Syria do not have free access to drinking water. The water crisis in Syria was triggered by an armed conflict during which water supply systems also suffered.

Syria is a home of the large Abkhaz Diaspora whose representatives are fighting against international terrorism.
