In April 2016, UNPO’s main activity consisted in its XXI Presidency session, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden. In this context, UNPO Members and other interested parties participated in a conference on the role of diasporas as peace-makers, but also in a cultural event including dances, singing and other cultural performances of various communities. UNPO gladly welcomed South Arabia among its members. Overall the two-day event was a major success for the organisation and a source of inspiration for the activities of the coming months.
During the month of April, UNPO also co-organised a conference on Uyghur refugees in partnership with the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) and the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) in Berlin. The two-day conference brought together various stakeholders and human rights activists to discuss the situation of Uyghur refugees and asylum seekers worldwide.
UNPO also participated with IRA-Mauritania in an anti-slavery demonstration in front of the Mauritanian Embassy and the German Parliament in Berlin.
Finally, among the many activities of the month, UNPO organised advocacy meetings between Iraqi Turkmen representatives and MEPs and EEAS officials, during which the EU politicians and officials were updated on the dramatic situation of the community.
