Abkhazia: Sixth Anniversary of Venezuelan Recognition

On 10 September 2009, Venezuela recognised Abkhazia as an independent State, endorsing the population’s right to self-determination. On the sixth anniversary of this important day relations between the two countries remain strong.

Below is an article from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia:

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia V. Chirikba sent a note to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela Delcy Eloine Gomez Rodriguez on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the recognition of the Republic of Abkhazia by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The note says, in particular:

"The Day of September 10th, 2009 is a truly significant date in the modern history of our country. The decision of the leadership of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the person of the great leader and great friend of Abkhazia Hugo Chavez Frias to support the historical right to self-determination of the people of Abkhazia will always be remembered with a deep sense of gratitude in our country.

I note with satisfaction that the existing relations between our two countries over the years of cooperation are distinguished by feelings of friendship and mutual respect. We have a very good level of understanding and convergence of views on bilateral cooperation. The agenda of our interstate relations is saturated with new projects. We are ready to fully contribute to further enhancement of the whole complex of bilateral cooperation."
