Kosova: Growing International Support for Interpol and UNESCO Membership


On 21 August 2015, the departing Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Mr Farid Zarif, delivered his last statement to the UN Security Council. During the session, Kosova’s possible membership in Interpol and UNESCO was positively assessed and received considerable support from UNSC countries, among which the United States, UK, France and Spain.

The representative of the United States supported Kosovo’s Interpol and UNESCO membership and called on other members to do the same.

He said that Kosovo should become an Interpol member state in the light of combating terrorism and organized crime, adding that the U.S. also supports Kosovo’s UNESCO membership and that Pristina is responsible for the preservation of cultural monuments on its territory.

The ambassadors of the Great Britain and France welcomed the decision by the Kosovo parliament on formation of a special court and supported the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

For Spain, UNMIK plays the key role in Kosovo, the country’s ambassador underlined, adding that the situation in Kosovo is stable but fragile.

The representatives of Angola, Chile and Venezuela underlined that Resolution 1244 still stands as the legal basis for searching a solution to the Kosovo issue and offered support to UNMIK.

The ambassador of Malaysia said that UNMIK has the central role in promoting security and honouring human rights in Kosovo.
