Hungarian Minority in Romania: Parliamentary Speaker Meets Ethnic Hungarian Leaders in Budapest
The Hungarian House speaker met representatives of ethnic Hungarians in Romania to discuss issues related to their aspirations for autonomy and the current political situation in the country in terms of Hungary possibly playing a more active role in these issue areas.

Parliamentary Speaker Laszlo Kover held talks with the leaders of two parties representing ethnic Hungarians in Romania in Budapest on Saturday[6 September 2014], parliament’s press office said.
He met Tibor T. Toro, president of the Hungarian People’s Party of Transylvania, and Zsolt Szilagyi, the party’s deputy president and candidate for president in the upcoming elections in Romania. The two leaders briefed Kover about developments related to the ballot.
The sides also discussed developments concerning the ethnic Hungarian community’s relations with Hungary and the community’s endeavours towards autonomy.
Kover also met Zsolt Biro, president of the Hungarian Civic Party, who briefed the speaker about the party’s ambition to form a broadest cooperation possible in Romanian politics on autonomy matters.
“The two sides regard the policy Hungary has pursued towards Hungarian communities abroad over the past four years a common success of the Hungarian community in the Carpathian Basin and exemplary by international standards. This policy has strengthened the national cohesion of the Hungarian people, as well as the region’s security and political stability,” Kover’s press office said in a statement.
The Hungarian house speaker stated his continued support to the Hungarian Civic Party.
