UNPO Supports Southern Cameroons’ Appeal for Freedom and Solidarity

On Thursday 21 August 2014, the Southern Cameroons Nations Council (SCNC), with the support of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), held a demonstration in front of the European Parliament in Brussels, sparked by the recent arrest of 300 innocent civilians who attended the funeral ceremony of SCNC Chairman Chief Ayamba Ette Otun in the town of Mamfe. The UNPO expressed its solidarity with the SCNC and the people of Southern Cameroons in calling for freedom and justice for the detainees. During the funeral of Chief Ayamba, who passed away on 18 June 2014 after briefly struggling with illness, all roads were blocked to prevent SCNC leaders and activists from attending the burial.

The SCNC appeal to the European Union and all democratic nations of Europe to pressure President Paul Biya of Cameroon to engage in constructive dialogue, to release all SCNC detainees, to guarantee the freedom of assembly and the right of British Southern Cameroonians to organize peaceful meetings or gatherings in their homeland without obstruction from the State. They call upon the European institutions and Governemnts to support the SCNC and the Southern Cameroonian people in their legitimate struggle to restore democracy, the rule of law and freedom in British Southern Cameroon.
