Somaliland: New Orphanage Marks Humanitarian Progress


Today marks another landmark in recent endeavors towards availing orphans in the country a comfortable and appropriate life, according to the First Lady of Somaliland, Ms Amina Mohamed Jirde 'Amina Weris' who made the statement during a stone laying foundation for a new orphanage in Heedho estate Hargeisa.

The first lady, who was flanked by the mayor of Hargeisa Councillor Abdirahman Aideed Soltelco and other guests, also committed to continued support towards issues pertaining to lifting the livelihoods of orphaned children in the country.

According to the First Lady, the efforts of Al-najah – a local Nongovernmental organization which is not only implementing construction but solicited funding for the new centre – need to be emulated by Somalilanders, thence ensuring that less privileged children amidst our society are availed regular lives.

"It is an honour for me to be present here at this auspicious function meant to establish homes to orphans from all regions of Somaliland," said Amina Weris.

The mayor of Hargeisa Cllr Soltelco who also extended his council's compliments to Al-najah LNGO urged residents of the Somaliland capital city to facilitate the availability of any piece of land required for establishment public facilities like hospitals, schools, orphanages and roads etc.

Briefing on the new centre, which he said shall have a capacity to host over 300 children, the chairperson of Al-Najah LNGO Sheikh Ahmed Abdisalan Eid also revealed that the funding towards making the orphanage a reality was courtesy of a donation from the government and people of Kuwait. Once completed the Heedho estate based children's centre is expected to host needy orphans from not only Somaliland but from neighboring countries as well.
