Hungarian Minority in Romania: No Violation of Basic Treaty

Keeping the issue of autonomy alive far from violates the Hungarian-Romanian basic treaty since the treaty itself makes minority affairs a bilateral issue, foreign affairs spokeswoman Anna Nagy told MTI on Friday [15 August 2014].
Nagy commented on Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean’s remark on Thursday [14 August 2014], that Hungarian support for ethnic autonomy ran counter to the Hungary-Romania basic treaty.
Hungary has made it abundantly clear that it does not consider the affairs of Romania’s Hungarian minority as Romania’s internal business, and former foreign minister Janos Martonyi did so during his visit to Bucharest in March last year [2013] , she noted. As for autonomy, she said the Romanian government was setting itself up for a dispute with its own citizens rather than with Hungary, since this is an endeavour of most ethnic Hungarian Romanians.
Still, history shows that autonomy cannot be won without the support of the mother country, Nagy said, adding that Hungary’s initiatives, however, do not aim towards winning territorial autonomy. “[This is] often misinterpreted by the Romanian side”.
