Iraqi Turkmen: 12-Year-Old Turkmen Girl Killed During Airstrikes

The bombardments in Tuz Khurmatu, a town in the south of Kirkuk which is mostly populated by Turkmens, resulted in death of a 12-year-old Turkmen girl and left 8 wounded behind.

According to some Turkish media reports, three Iraqi warplanes were on patrol duty over the town when they were fired upon from a Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) office building. The Iraqi forces then reportedly bombed the building and the surrounding area.

Tuz Khurmatu, densely populated by Turkmens, lies within territory administered by the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG). There have been previous attacks on the town as well as many attacks against Turkmens living in Kirkuk, Tal Afar and Mosul, as well as other predominantly Turkmen areas. Turkmen leaders, politicians and businessmen were also assassinated as sectarian tensions rose during the recent Iraqi election period.

Cabbar Yaver, secretary-general of KRG forces (peshmerge), was quoted in Turkish media reports as saying that the Iraqi war planes had targeted civilian areas in the town.

Iraq's Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government is expected to issue a statement about Sunday [6 July 2014] 's attack.

Last month [June 2014], Hicran Kazancı, the Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITC) representative in Turkey, called on Turkey, the United Nations and civil society organizations to urge the Iraqi central government to take more measures to guarantee the security of Iraqi Turkmens.

Iraq is grappling with its worst surge in violence since the sectarian violence of 2006 and 2007, when the country was pushed to the brink of civil war.
