Hungarian Minority in Romania: Request For New Consulate Rejected

Romania rejected Hungary’s request for opening two new consulates in Transylvania.

Romania has rejected the application Hungary submitted last April [2014] to open two consular offices in the Romanian cities of Oradea (Nagyvarad) and Targu Mures (Marosvasarhely), the foreign ministry’s spokeswoman told MTI on Thursday [3 July 2014].

The ministry said the move is “incomprehensible”, as the Romanian side has not provided any substantive explanation for the decision and Hungary has never rejected a similar request by a foreign country, said Anna Nagy. She said the decision went against European practices.

Hungary is rather disappointed because Titus Corlatean, the Romanian foreign minister, spoke in a highly positive tone about further developing Hungarian-Romanian relations after the formation of the new Hungarian government.

Hungary operates consulates at the country’s embassy in Bucharest and in Miercurea Ciuc (Csikszereda) and Cluj (Kolozsvar).
