WFP signed an agreement with Zanzibar Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, where the former will provide financial and capacity building in promoting seaweed farming in Zanzibar, which has declined in recent years.

Ms Diane Tempelman from WFP said the support aims at supporting youths and women engaged in seaweed farming so that they improve production.

“We want successful and sustainable seaweed farming so that local people can increase their income, let us work together to achieve the goal,” said the WFP officer, adding that the project’s aim is to reduce unemployment.

She said that WFP study indicates that Zanzibar still has the potential for seaweed production which is an opportunity to women and youths engaged in the farming.

About 328 million US dollars has been allocated for the programme. Ms Tempelman said Zanzibar is the third country in Africa to qualify for the project because the island produces quality seaweed.

Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Mr Mohammed Said Mohammed thanked WFP for the project, which is expected to improve the lives of youths and women in the Isles.
