Ogoni: Nigerian Senator Says Ogoni Demand For Governorship Is Legitimate

Senator Magnus Abe addresses a crowd regarding the 2015 governorship of the Rivers State, saying the Ogoni demand for an Ogoni governor is legitimate.

Below is an article published by the Nigerian Tribune:

The Senator representing Rivers South-East in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, said the demand by the people of Ogoni ethnic nationality, to produce a governor for Rivers State in 2015, is legitimate.

Abe, who disclosed this while speaking at the handing over of the 1500 capacity Biara Town Hall he renovated and equipped for  the community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, however, urged the people to clamour for a governor with the knowledge that power comes from God.

“Let me say clearly that if the Ogonis’ demand for governorship in 2015, it is not illegitimate. Power comes from God; so if you are asking for power, ask for  power that comes from God,” he said, at the occasion that featured the inauguration of Biara chapter of the Ogoni Democratic Movement (ODM), a group championing the emergence of an Ogoni governor in 2015.

“Ogonis are known for non-violent struggle as the late Ken Saro-Wiwa taught us. As we agitate for an Ogoni governor to succeed His Excellency, Rt. Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, let’s do it non-violently.”

The lawmaker appealed to the people of Biara community to continue to support the Amaechi-led administration to sustain the benefits from his government.

“Our team is headed by Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. If you support us as you have been supporting us; if you help us in such a manner that it is clear that you supported us, you will continue to benefit,” he said.
