Circassian Day at the European Parliament Highlights Abkhaz Aspirations

Friday, 28 June, marked the 8th annual Circassian Day at the European Parliament. This year, the conference was dedicated largely to Abkhazia, a founding member of UNPO

The conference celebrated Abkhazia’s rich culture through music, film and food.

Several panels of international experts engaged in constructive dialogues about the political aspirations of Abkhazia, such as the quest for international recognition; the Circassian role in an international context; and the need for preservation of Circassian and Abkhazian culture and language through education.

The UNPO Treasurer, Jeroen Zandberg, also addressed the conference, speaking about the close relationship the organization has with Abkhazia, which has been a member since 1991.

Towards the end of the conference, renown opera singers and musicians performed for the audience by bringing traditional music to the floor.

The event came one day after UNPO signed a cooperation agreement with the Abkhaz Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

UNPO is delighted to have been a part of this event that aims to create a shared vision of a prosperous, developed and internationally recognized Abkhazia.
