Since the day he received the prestigious award of Front Line Defender on May 3, Biram Dah Abeid has been traveling all around Europe to meet with representatives of different countries and organizations. The President of IRA Mauritanie did not forget to pay visit to the country of international Peace and Justice. His short stay in the Netherlands was very productive and should bring new supports to the cause of the Haratin.

On Thursday, 30 May 2013, just after he arrived in The Hague, Biram Dah Abeid had the opportunity to enter the Dutch Parliament premises where he met Lotte van Mourik, representative of the Dutch political party called Democraten 66, a left wing liberal party. Biram detailed her the situation faced by his people, which are victim of forced labor, sexual harassment and rape, and can’t have access to education, wedding, or travel.

For the rest of the day, Biram was welcomed by the whole staff of the UNPO office which organized for the occasion an event with him as a keynote speaker. This event aimed at raising awareness about the slavery practices in Mauritania thanks to the screening of a documentary made by CNN in 2012, followed by an exchange between Biram Dah Abeid and the audience. UNPO also took the opportunity of this event to launch a project they have been collaborating on with IRA for the past few months. This project, Proud2Bfree, aims at empowering 20 Haratin women who fled their masters.

Biram Dah Abeid started his second day in The Hague with a visit to the embassy of Norway. While explaining the existence of a slavery code written between the 9th and 15th century and still put in practice despite the 2007 anti-slavery law, he had the opportunity to express his hopes to gain the support of a country like Norway, which is known to be influent on the Human Right stage.

The train then took Biram to Amsterdam where he met with Désiré Bonis, representative of the labor party currently in power (PVDA) and Member of Parliament, also spokesperson for Europe. This exchange was quite promising. The President of IRA Mauritania highlighted the importance of supporting projects such as Proud2Bfree, to provide slaves with education, skills or health care.

After this brief but pleasant passage in the capital, Biram Dah Abeid went back to The Hague where he was warmly welcomed by Mr. Hans van de Voogd and his colleague, working for the North Africa and Middle East department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They listened carefully to Biram Dah Abeid who tried to explain that the government of Mauritania is hiding behind the ratification of International Conventions and the writing of national anti-slavery law to show themselves to the World as a country of Human Rights. The slavery-code, which is a false interpretation of the Koran according to Biram, is indeed constitutionally recognized as the Supreme Law and as such is the prevailing law should there be a conflict between the different legislations.

The stay of Mr. Abeid in the Netherlands finished with an interview with Mr. Niels Posthumus, reporter in South Africa for the Dutch Newspaper Trouw. The content of the words exchange between Biram Dah Abeid and the journalist, already well aware of the situation in Mauritania, makes us hope for a highly interesting article.

UNPO hopes that this interview and these various meetings will contribute to raise awareness about the unknown situation in Mauritania and give a new momentum to the cause of the Haratin, defended by UNPO for several years already, when the IRA became a Member of the organization.
