Crimean Tatars: Creation Of Kyiv Regional Parliament

The Mejlis, or parliament, of the Crimean Tatar People has decided to create a Kyiv regional mejlis, which will unites Crimean Tatars living in Kyiv and Kyiv region.

As the press service of Mejlis reported, this decision was taken in Simferopol on January 25 at a sitting of Mejlis to consider the significant increase in the number of Crimean Tatars living in Kyiv and Kyiv region for reasons of education and employment.

According to the decision of Mejlis, the commission on preparation and organization of the elections of the local mejlis was charged with organizing elections of the members of local mejlis in Kyiv region.

As a statement on local government agencies of the Crimean Tatar People posted on the Mejlis official Web site reads, local government authorities of the Crimean Tatar People are chosen to implement the decisions of the quriltai (congress) of the Crimean People and the Mejlis, and to independently resolve issues connected with the life of Crimean Tatars.

At the same time, the system of local government bodies is represented by local and regional mejlis.

According to the document, a local mejlis is a representative-executive local government body of the Crimean people in the form of village, settlement, and city councils.

A regional mejlis is an executive local government authority of the Crimean Tatars in city and region.

According to the statement, a regional mejlis is responsible for the implementation of decisions of the congress, the Mejlis, its presidium, and regional conferences on the territory of corresponding administrative-territorial entities. The regional mejlis also upholds the interests of the Crimean Tatars in the relations of the executive and local government agencies, unions of citizens, and legal and individual entities.

The regional mejlis also has the right to take measures regarding the protection of the legal rights of the Crimean Tatars, and provide assistance in establishing equal rights for all nationalities living on a territory.
