East Turkestan: Demonstration On UN Human Rights Day

The World Uyghurs Congress [WUC] invites everyone to attend a Uyghur demonstration on December 10th in Munich, Germany. The demonstration calls to voice your support for the realisation of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights for all oppressed peoples and in particular to raise awareness of the Uyghur situation.

Below you can find an article published by World Uyhurt Congress:

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) wishes to announce that it will be holding a demonstration in Munich to raise awareness of the Uyghur human rights situation. The demonstration will take place on 10 December 2012, the same day as the United Nations Human Rights Day, which celebrates the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights by the UN General Assembly. The demonstration will take place at the following address and time:

 Karlplatz 25, 80335 München

10 December, 2012. between 16.00-18:00

This day serves as a poignant reminder of the lack of human rights that many endure around the world, with many peoples using this day to help them bring attention to their human rights concerns.

Each year, the UN assigns a theme on which it wishes to raise awareness, with this year’s theme being the rights of all people — women, youth, minorities, persons with disabilities, indigenous people, the poor and marginalised — to make their voices heard in public life and be included in political decision-making.

The timing of UN Human Rights Day is particularly poignant given the context of the recent leadership change in the People’s Republic of China, which could stand as an important juncture to implement real reforms that will improve the human rights condition for the Uyghurs, though many commentators maintain their reservations. Prior to, during and after the leadership change, there were many incidents where the freedoms of Uyghurs were restricted, such as house detentions, heightened security presence and arrests, which all run contrary to the themes of the 2012 UN Human Rights Day.

Likewise, the very fact that Uyghurs are able to peacefully assemble, associate and voice their concerns through such demonstrations illustrates the contrast between the reality in East Turkestan and democratic, free countries like Germany. The WUC therefore invites all interested parties to attend the demonstration on 10 December and to stand in solidarity with us and to voice your support for the realisation of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights for all oppressed peoples.
