Ogoni: Call For Implementation

The Ogoni have requested the implementation of the UNEP report concerning the impact of oil exploration on Ogoniland, at the occasion of the anniversary of the execution of Ken Sarowiwa on November 10th .

The Ogoni have again appealed to the Federal Government to commence implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, report on the area.

It will be recalled that the international body had conducted an assessment of the impact of oil exploration on Ogoniland at the end of which it called for urgent remediation, among other things, to be carried out in the area.

In his address weekend, to mark the anniversary of the execution of Ken Sarowiwa and other Ogoni martyrs, Chairman, Provisional Council of Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, MOSOP, Prof Ben Naanen, said the Federal Government should take steps to begin implementation of the report.

He said: “MOSOP is calling on the Nigerian Government to take immediate steps to implement the UNEP report, the pre-emptive set up of HYPREP notwithstanding.

“The Ogoni people want to see action. It is a major concern that the Federal Government does not seem to have made the required financial provision for the implementation.

“To all intents and purposes, the government appears to have made up its mind to kill the UNEP report through financial starvation and other bureaucratic means.”

Prof. Nanen also called for a judicial inquiry into the murder of Ogoni four, Ken Sarowiwa and others who died with him.
