Southern Azerbaijan: New SANAM Report On Rights Violations


The human rights commission of the Southern Azerbaijan National Awakening Movement (SANAM) has published its latest catalogue of cases affecting nonviolent activists for Azeri rights in Iran.

Below is a report published by the Southern Azerbaijan National Awakening Movement (SANAM):

-        Known national activist, Akbar Moohajeri was arrested on 21.5.2012 and was sent to isolation section of the Tabriz Prison on 1.6.2012.  He was released with a bond for what is worth three million Iranian Tumans (Iran’s currency). Mr. Moohajeri was charged on accounts of participating in the Southern Azerbaijan National Uprising Day events (the incident which happened in May, 2006, which was remembered each year after).

-        Ms. Afsaneh Togheer was arrested on 21.5.2012 and she was arrested for twelve days, after which she was taken the Tabriz Prison. She was kept in the prison for twenty days. Similar to the case above, Ms. Togheer was charged on the account of participating in the peaceful anniversary events of the May 2006 uprising. She was also charged with participating in the peaceful protests regarding the purposeful drying of the Orumiyeh Lake by the Iranian Regime. She was set free on 11.6.2012 with a bond of five million Iranian Tumans.

-        Mr. Ali Hamed Eeman was arrested in Tabriz on 21.5.2012. On his court appearance on 6.6.2012, Mr. Eeman was charged with ethnic separatism and calling the nation to rise up against the Iranian Regime.  Ali Hamed Eeman was later released on 9.6.2012.

-        Mr. Hosseyn Ahmadeeyan appeared in court in the Southern Azerbaijani city of Maragha for charges of participating and spreading flyers in the anniversary events of the May 2006 national uprising.

-        Mr. Ebraheem Rasheedee was released on a bond of collateral after staying in prison for four months. He was charged with threatening national security and trying to topple the Iranian Regime.

-        Mr. Ameer Hosseyn Alavee was arrested in the Southern Azerbaijan city of Zangan (Zanjan) on 28.5.2012, and his whereabouts were told to his family after ten days of this date. He was charged with participating in the anniversary events of the 2006 national uprising day.

-        Maharram Kamranee, a known Southern Azerbaijani human rights activist. editor of the Oyanish Magazine, and member of the Azerbaijani Writers League, was sentenced to definite time of six months in prison for charges such as making propaganda against the Iranian Regime, and attend meeting that are against this regime.

-        Abbas Leesanee, a Southern Azerbaijani cultural activist appeared in court in court (5-9.6.2012), but he did not receive a sentence. He was accused with propaganda against the Iranian Regime, appearing in the protests regarding the purposeful drying of the Orumiyeh Salt Lake by the Iranian regime, and also participating in the anniversary events of the May 2006 national uprising day.

-        Hosseyn Ronaghee, was arrested on 12.12.2009 ant kept in cell for 10 months and got tortured. On 26.5.2012, Mr. Ronaghee started hunger strike and later his rights to receive visitors were frozen. Due to harsh conditions in prison in addition to torture, Mr. Hosseyn Ronaghe lost one of his kidneys completely and 80% from the other one. He was later taken to hospital in Tehran where he still could not receive visitors. He was accused of spreading negative propaganda against the Iranian regime.

-        Omid Tooree was expelled from university on 6.6.2012. He was accused of spreading negative propaganda against the Iranian regime and attending in meetings that were showing the inhumane side of the regime.

-        Mahdee Oosoolee Kheeyavee was called to appear in court in Ardabil, northeastern Southern Azerbaijan on 11.6.2012.  Mr. Kheeyavee was arrested in 2011 for participating in the protests of the  drying of the Lake Orumiyeh, and he was released two weeks later.

-        Bahnam and Bahram Jafaree (brothers) were arrested on ) 21.5.2012 by the security forces of the Iranian regime (Ettelaat) for participating in the protest meeting regarding the purposeful drying of Lake Orumiyeh and anniversary events of the May 2006 S. Azerbaijan national uprising day. Jafaree brothers were released temporarily with collateral of thirty million Iranian Tumans.

-        Ali Rezayee was arrested on 19.3.2012 in the Southern Azerbaijani city of Miyanah and was sent to the Tabriz prison on 26.3.2012.  The court sentenced him to nine months and one day in prison along with a fine of two million Iranian Tumans, for his activities in Facebook against the Iranian regime and also criticizing top Iranian clerics.

-        Davood Sheeree was arrested on 1.5.2012 and appeared in court on 11.6.2012. He was accused of appearing in protest meetings against the drying of the Orumiyeh Lake, and also spreading negative propaganda against the Iranian regime.

-        Saeed Matinpour, known S. Azerbaijani journalist and cultural activist completed his third year in prison out of the eight years he is sentenced to. He is tortured and was placed in cell on 11.6.2012.

-        Mohammed Eskandarzadeh, was arrested on 20.5.2012 and taken to custody by the security forces of the Iranian regime, where he was tortured. Mr. Eskandarzadeh was not given a chance for trial and kept illegally by the Ettelaat. He was able to secretly notify his family of his condition which is full of torture.

-        37 S. Azerbaijani Turks were arrested due to their participation in the 2011 peaceful protests of the drying of Orumiyeh Salt Lake. They were tried by court on 11.6.2012 and received a total sentence of 18 years in prison and 1110 whips. Their names are as follows:

-        Ms. Behjat Faramarzi, Jafar Purbayghee, Mehrdad Aghapour, Naser Abdee, Mehyar Ghourbanee, Peyman Atash Binab, Masoud Peydayee, Sabher Ahmadee, Muhammed Esmayelee, Alireza Hoseynzadeh, Nuraddeen Zarepour, Nader Amiri Sahari, Abolfazl Bakhshpour, Rameen Ghulupour, Hamed Niknam Pouralilou, Ali Jabraeelzadeh, Javad Eyvazi, Ali Rafepour Ayyoubi, Muhammed Asadee, Reza Sheeree,  Hoseyn Moghtader Ehsanee, Muhammed Chenari, Mojtaba Sabbaq Atefi, Vahid Barzegari, Seyed Morteza Mousavi, Reza Bordbar Jamalabadee, Farroukh Taghilou, Toheed Aslani, Saman Jahanpour, Hamid Ghasemi, Sattar Ahmadifer, Mohsen Alishahi, Pedram Asgaree Davudgar, Hamed Daneshpour Zandabadeeh, Alireza Azharee, Keeyumars Ghorbaneeh.

-        Fardeen Moradpour, a S. Azerbaijani human rights activist in the prison of the Iranian regime has lost most of his vision because of torture in addition to harsh conditions.  He has not been permitted by the Ettelaat to seek medical help from hospitals.

-        Mohammadhosseyn Jafarpour, accused of spying against the Iranian regime, has been in prison for 9 months, and his total sentence period is 1 year and 6 months.

-        Mohammad Ahadifar, a young S. Azerbaijani Turkish activist who was arrested along with other activists in burial ceremony of Mr. Ebraheem Jafarzadej, a known national activist who died in a suspicious traffic accident, was allowed to bail out by leaving a collateral that is worth two hundred million Iranian Tumans. He was later called to court again in the S. Azerbaijani city of Khoy where he was sentenced to four months and ten days in prison. He was later sentenced to six months in prison by Tabriz court.

-        Bahnam Sheykhee, a national activist who participated in the gatherings in 2011 for protesting the drying of Orumiyeh Lake was kept under arrest for more than fifty days. Although he was initially allowed to bail out with a 50 million Tuman collateral, he was later sentenced to six months in prison by Tabriz court.

-         Hamed Manafee, from the human rights activists of Khoy city, accused of appearing in the Lake Orumiyeh protests of 2011, and also in the burial ceremony of Ebraheem Jafarzadeh, a known S. Azerbaijani national activist who lost his life in a suspicious traffic accident, and was kept under arrest for eighteen days and later allowed to bail out with a forty million Tuman collateral.

-        Mahdee Deyhamee was sentenced to three months and one day in prison, and before this he was sentenced to five months in prison in accusation of trying to destabilize the stability of the Iranian regime.  He was also arrested for eight days by the Orumiyeh Ettelaat (security forces) in accusation of participating in the peaceful Orumiyeh Lake protests.

-        On 26.6.2012, 11 S. Azerbaijani activists were called to court in the city of Khoy. They were accused of participating in the burial ceremony of Mr. Ebraheem Jafarzadeh. Their names are as follows:

-         Shirzad Hajeelou, Bahman Naserzadeh, Shahram Yuzbashee, Mohammed Ahadee, Vaheed Faezpour, Javad Pareekhanee, Hamid Manafee, Hamid Pourjafarali, Mahdee Ghiyasi, Muhammed Khurusha, Mohammed Bayat.

-        Vaheed Rastghou was arrested on 27.6.2012 at his father’s house. All of his personal items were confiscated by the security forces of the Iranian regime.

-        Vaheed Habeebcheshmah was arrested for participating in the Mother Language Day on 27.6.2012. He was able to bail out after 80 days in prison.

-        Mr. Saeed Moghanlou, a known S. Azerbaijani national activist was imprisoned. He is a known journalist/writer and he had been imprisoned before.
