National symbols: Four decades later

On December 1st, 2001, it was commemorated that 40 years ago, on 1 December1961 the national symbols of West Papua; the Morning star flag and the national anthem `Hai Tanahku Papua` were officially recognised by the then colonial rulers, the Netherlands. After 40 years of oppression and violence, these symbols of political independence and unity are still a source of identity for the Papuans.
