A decade has gone by since the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11th. Now the Chinese regime continues using the global fight against terrorism as an excuse to crackdown on Uyghur Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region of China—that’s according to a press release of the German-based organization the World Uyghur Congress (WUC).

WUC president Rebiya Kadeer says, “The Chinese authorities found in 9/11 the perfect excuse to crack down on all forms of peaceful political, social and cultural Uyghur dissent and to attribute any out spark of violence in the region to the ‘three forces’ of terrorism, separatism, and religious extremism.”

Discrimination against Uyghurs has increased significantly since 9/11, according to the WUC.

Chinese authorities have misused the fight against terrorism to suppress and silence all political opponents—attributing any unrest in Xinjiang to Uyghur pro-independence members.

Protests by Uyghurs have been labeled as terrorism—the police detaining thousands of Uyghur Muslims under the charge of “endangering state security.” Kadeer said the Chinese Communist Party often uses that charge “to criminalize [Uyghurs’] peaceful exercise of their human rights”—prosecuting and imprisoning innocent Uyghur Muslims
