Sanjak: Party Wants Sanjak Office in Brussels

Sanjak representatives wish to set up offices in Brussels to explore EU funding for development projects.

Below is an article published by B92:

Party for Sandžak Chairman Fevzija Murić has launched an initiative for Novi Pazar to open an office in Brussels.

That would come "along the line of Vojvodina, Niš, and Kragujevac", news agencies reported on Thursday [June 2, 2011].

"We hope that the initiative will be upheld by other political factors in Sandžak and the rest of Serbia. We see nothing wrong about it and it can only benefit us in Sandžak," Murić said.

He maintains that this would bring Novi Pazar and Sandžak closer to the EU pre-accession funds and the source of information and that they would be better informed about projects that could be financed by the European Union.

Murić's Party for Sandžak is a member of the governing coalition at the local level in Novi Pazar.

Part of the opposition in Serbia regards the opening of offices of individuals regions in Brussels as a prelude to a disintegration of Serbia and a secession of Vojvodina and Sandžak.

Sandžak is a geographical region spreading in three countries that in Serbia coincides with the Raška District. It is home to the largest Muslim population in the country and is plagued by economic problems and political volatility.
