Ogoni: Plot to Assassinate MOSOP President

Since Ogoni Day, President of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mr. Ledum Mitee, has been threatened several times through anonymous telephone calls.

Below is an article published by All Africa:

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) yesterday said it has uncovered a plot by some politicians to assassinate its President, Mr. Ledum Mitee. In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt, MOSOP said the plot to assassinate Mitee began soon after the 2011 Ogoni Day celebration.

"Since the making of the last Ogoni Day on the 4th of January, 2011, there has been several death threats and plots against the MOSOP president through anonymous telephone calls and informants. In one instance, the threat was received by a text message from telephone No. 09138169305", it said.

The statement, which was signed by MOSOP's Information Officer, Bari-ara Kpalap said the organization reliably gathered that those plotting the evil acts may be those that think that the MOSOP leadership is against their current political ambition and interests.

"MOSOP sources indicate that such politically exposed persons, on the false perception that the MOSOP leadership is against their current political ambition and interests may be behind these dastardly moves", the statement said.

Restating its non-political partisanship, the organization regretted that is consistent calls on politicians to abhor violence did not appear to have been taken seriously. It however, warned that it will hold such persons squarely responsible if anything should happen to its leadership
