Assyria: Genocide Monument to be Unveiled

Active ImageThe Assyrian Universal Alliance has announced that the Assyrian Genocide Monument will be unveiled on August 7 2010.

Below is an article published by Fair Field Champion:

August 7 holds a special significance because it is observed by the Assyrian population around the world as Assyrian Martyrs Day, although no official recognition has been granted by government in Australia.

Deputy secretary-general Hermiz Shahen said the unveiling would coincide with "honouring the memory of the victims of the Assyrian genocide committed by the Ottoman government during World War I''.

Mr Shahen said the foundation work and the 1.2-metre high base were completed last week.

He said the Assyrian Universal Alliance had organised a two-day program to unveil the monument.

"The unveiling will commence at 11am at Bonnyrigg Park followed by a seminar on the Assyrian genocide,'' Mr Shahen said. "A documentary will be screened at the Assyrian Social Centre that shows the horror of genocide. The Assyrian Universal Alliance is extending an open invitation to all Assyrians around the globe to attend this important memorial ceremony to share this historic moment with us.''

The Turkish community have continued to oppose the monument and recently held a protest at Fairfield Council chambers.

The NSW Turkish Businessmen's Association plans to hold another rally soon.
