The court found the defendant, Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, guilty of extorting 350,000 dollars from another police officer witness in the Politskaya murder trial, according to the Interfax agency.
Khadzhikurbanov himself, along with two others, had been acquitted in the case in a decision handed down February 19, 2009.
Earlier in February, Novaya Gazeta said the witness, city police officer Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov, had owed money to Khadzhikurbanov but could not pay it back.
Instead of cash, Khadzhikurbanov tried in vain to force Pavlyuchenkov to spy on Politkovskaya shortly before her death, the newspaper said.
Prosecutors argued that information which Pavlyuchenkov gathered on the journalist was used by her killer, who is still at large.
Russian prosecutors regard Khadzhikurbanov as well as three further suspects as accomplices of the killer who is being sought under an international arrest warrant.
In the first trial over the contract-style murder, a Moscow court acquitted all four defendants, including Khadzhikurbanov, after the 12-member jury said insufficient evidence had been presented by prosecutors to link them to the murder.
But the country's Supreme Court overturned that decision and ordered a new trial. Prosecutors and family relatives and friends of Politskaya are convinced that the accused are linked to the murder.
Politskaya, an award-winning journalist for the daily Novaya Gazeta, reported on human rights abuses by the Russian forces during two wars in Chechnya in the early 1990s.
Her killing shocked the international community and raised concerns about crackdowns on Kremlin-critical reporters under former president Vladimir Putin, now serving as prime minister.
Another Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Baburova and a prominent rights lawyer were gunned down in central Moscow in January 2009.
